Kelvin at the Executive Policy Committee - THE BIG ONE!

We will definitely be headed to EPC on Wednesday, January 10th, at 9AM. The EPC meets on the second floor of the City Hall Council Building. We'd like as many concerned residents to come out as possible, because a strong showing gives our messages much more power.

If you know ANYONE who can attend the meeting (not just Kelvin-area residents), please tell them about it. We need support from everyone who feels that community centres need to be supported.

Tell Your Kelvin Story

We're looking to compile some anecdotes from people who have fond memories of Kelvin Community Centre. If you have a story about Kelvin, perhaps playing on the team, or attending a dance class, or anything else, please e-mail us or post a comment on this blog. If we get enough stories, we'd like to create a little booklet to send our city councillors for their first day of work after the civic election.

City Council Meets: the Kelvin decision will be reviewed after the election

On Wednesday, Sept. 28, Councillor Lillian Thomas made a motion on Kelvin to City Council. We're still reviewing the actual content of the meeting, but we do know that council decided to return the matter to the Executive Policy Committee to review. It is apparently the intention of the mayor and EPC to await the consultations that our board executive will be having with the General Council of Winnipeg Community Centres in the first week of October. Because there are no further council or committee meetings until after the civic election on October 25th, Kelvin will not appear before the Executive Policy Committee until sometime around November.

This means that we will be able to continue our fall programming as planned. We should have a newsletter out to residents and some area businesses the first week of October, and you'll be able to find information on our programming.

This is good news in the short-term, but it hasn't changed the city's long-term plan to close Kelvin... we need to prove to them without a doubt that Kelvin meets a proven need, that it is necessary for our community, and that we have enough local support to make our community centre a place that we can be proud of for years to come.

Volunteer Meetings - Please attend one if you can

Hi,

We'll be having two meetings this weekend, to give everyone an update on Kelvin, and to find out who might be willing to volunteer for some of the programs and events we're planning this fall and winter. We decided to have the meeting twice, so that everyone has a better chance of attending a meeting.

We are also going to be sending out our October Newsletter hopefully over the weekend, and we will be looking for volunteers to help distribute the newsletters both to the mailboxes of residents and as "please take one" dropoffs to local businesses and institutions.

Also, some of our team will also be working over the weekend to clear and prepare the club for the programming that will be running in October.

There are two meetings currently scheduled:

Saturday, September 30th
10-11 am
Kelvin Community Centre

Sunday, October 1st
2-3 pm
Kelvin Community Centre

If you have any questions about the meetings please contact me at 669-7470. Everyone is welcome and wanted!
